Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu

God Has A Dream: A Vision of Hope for Our Time,
© 2004 by Desmond Tutu, With Douglas Abrams
New York: Doubleday

Dear Child of God, if we are truly to understand God loves all of us, we must recognize that He loves our enemies, too. God does not share our hatred, no matter what the offense we have endured. We try to claim God for ourselves and for our cause, but God's love is too great to be confined to any one side of a conflict or to any one religion.

African Voices/African Roots

Africans in the New World are a people with strong ties to ancestry and traditions. Throughout the Diaspora, the African maintained some degree of his past, imparting it to the future in African tales of trickster animals and larger than life heroes, in naming practices, children’s games and front porch stories told to generations of children of the strong men and women who came before them.

African/Native American

Here we present works that document the alliance of indigenous peoples of the Americas, West Indies and Brazil with enslaved Africans. In these alliances, dissimilar people forged a bond based on what they had in common – the desire to live free of oppression. They combined their talents, skills and bravery to create new social and cultural entities throughout the Diaspora.

Genealogy and Oral History

The Oral Historian or Griot tradition is fundamental to West African culture. The Griot is responsible for learning and reciting the history of a family group, tribe or royal lineage. Alex Haley’s Roots introduced African Americans to the Griot or Jeliba. The tradition came to the New World with us and continues today in the works of our storytellers from Zora to Maya and all the Big Mamas and Pawpaws who know the value of recalling the past.

A Special Message from Joyce Reese McCollum, Editor of this Special Edition

To Our Readers, the warmest of holiday greetings from The Crew at Africana Heritage.

We have completed a wonderful labor of discovery in compiling the media excerpts in our “Gifts of the Season”.

Sometimes the wealth of information not yet accessible to the African American researcher is daunting, with so many records and so few transcribing, documenting and researching.

It is the mission of Africana Heritage to locate and make these precious records available. In keeping with our mission we have collected some of the very best books and authors for your reading pleasure. We have books for the genealogist, historian and the classroom that will give our readers many hours of enjoyment.

We at AH are so very proud of our efforts and believe that our readers will be informed, entertained and empowered by our selections.

In seeking the best titles and authors in history, culture and genealogy for African Americans a seemingly natural progression has lead us to expand our mission to include all descendents of the African Diaspora. You will see this focus in the richness of offerings from the Caribbean Islands and South as well as North America. As more and more African Americans trace their ethnic heritage through DNA there will be an increase in interest in ancestry, ancestral homelands, ethnic groups and cultures.

The Africana Heritage Project has compiled a huge database of information to meet the needs of researchers on all levels from academic to family genealogist. Coming features include in-depth research and documentation for the Domestic Slave Trade, the continuing story of Priscilla's Homecoming, and more on the African/Native heritage and Freedmen's Bureau Records. More and more records are becoming available and it is our mission to locate and make them accessible to our readers.

We hope that our "Gifts" will make your holiday season an adventure in self discovery through exploring the lives of our heroes and heroines, learning of our history and seeing the diversity and richness of our traditions. We are proud to present to you a wonderful sampling of the many marvelous works that celebrate our heritage, our ancestors and ourselves.

I hope that you will enjoy and take Bishop Tutu's message into your hearts as it is my Holiday wish for us all.

Enjoy.
Peace and Love
