This will is in Rutherford Co, NC, bordering SC and Spartanburg County. With a name like Bartlett CROWDER as a witness, one would wonder if these families are from Southside VA. I, William LUCUS, being of sound mind & memory. I give unto my wife Mary after my just debts are paid to have during her life time all my property of every kind lands, Negroes, cattle, household & kitchen furniture & farming tools, except one horse I have reserved for my grand-son Henry LUCUS. After the death of my wife Mary, all property except my land and Negroes Sam & Kato shall be sold, and after her debts & funeral expenses are paid from my personal property. $10 to be given to the Sunday School of Palm Tree Church to purchase books for said school by the direction of Henry SCHENCK, with the advice of said society. The balance to be equally divided in 3 parts chn. JOHN, JAMES & NANCY PARKER my dtr. I give unto my son John LUCUS forever all that tract of land which he lives on, also part of the tract which I live on, on the East side of old Lucus FORD, except that tract of land called the home tract, that was deeded to me by HARRIS and run out by Frank ALEXANDER, my wearing clothes. I hve give unto my dtr. NANCY PARKER & her husband, Andrew PARKER one tract of land called the ROPER tract & I also give him $1. 'Should my old servants, Cato (sic) & Samsurvive my wife, I will them to my sons John & james and they must support them or else they must be supported out of the land I have given them.'
