Being in a low state of bodily health, I will to my wife Polly DINKINS, during her widowhood, the Negroes Old George, Big David, Molly and her child Virginia, and Big Jenny, my mare and riding chair, my walnut cupboard, a third of my household and kitchen furniture, a third of all farm animals and farming tools, and a third of the crop whether gathered or in the field. I also give her the 50-acre parcel purchased from my son, Joshua DINKINS being part of the land on which John OSBORN formerly lived. I give to my son, James DINKINS the Negroes James, Phillis and her three children Hercules, Creasy, and Airy; to my son Frederick DINKINS the Negroes Nelson, Old Billy and his wife Milly and their dau Joise as well as the land that I now live on; and to my son Joshua DENKINS (sic) two Negroes Little Billy and Little George. I give to my dau Martha KENDRICK the Negroes Joe and his wife Silvy; I lend to my dau Mary SMITH the Negro Nathan, the land that she now lives on, and the tract in the Indian Boundary whereon William RICE* now lives during her natural life and at her demise they are to be divided among her children; I lend to my dau Peggy HENDERSON the Negro boy Harry for her natural life and at her demise he is to be (sold and his price?) divided among her children; and I lend to my dau Elizabeth BOWDEN the Negroes Edith and her three children Jasper, Kate, and _____(not named) for her natural life and at her demise to be divided among her children. I give to my grandson Robert DINKINS the Negro boy David Neal and $1200 in cash; to my grandson John DINKINS the Negro boy David Hardy and my tract of land on Steele Creek whereon my (son in law) Frederick DINKINS now lives; and to my grandsons, William H. SMITH and John D. SMITH, at the demise of my wife, the four Negroes Judith and her child (not named), David, son of Sylvia, and Big Jenny. All the remainder of my estate not specifically bequeathed is to be sold and the proceeds divided equally among my three sons, James, Frederick, and Joshua, and my three daus Martha KENDRICK, Mary SMITH, and Peggy HENDERSON. My two grandsons William H. and John D. SMITH and my two granddaughters Polly and Rebecca ROBERTS are to divide two shares. The property loaned to my wife is to be divided in like manner with the exception of Big Jenny. Two-thirds of the money in my possession at my demise is to be divided in the same fashion, and the other third I give to my wife. Exrs: Wife Polly, son James, and son in law John KENDRICK. Wit: J. ROOKER, Samuel HACKADAY, and James CONWAY. CODICIL of 31 May 1810. Since making the above will I have disposed of three Negroes – Jo and his wife, Sylvia willed to my dau Martha KENDRICK, and Jasper willed to my granddaughter Elizabeth BOWDEN. Upon reexamination of my will I am fully satisfied with it except the legacy to my two grandsons Robert and John DINKINS. I now will that my grandson Robert DINKINS have the Negro boy Bob in lieu of David, and that John DINKINS have Negro Tom instead of David Hardy. Also, I will that my dau Martha KENDRICK hae, in lieu of Negroes Jo and Sylvia, the Negro boy David Neel and woman Rachel, and that my granddau Elizabeth BOWDEN have in lieu of Negro boy Jasper the Negro woman Sarah.
